ANDALUCIA

To many, Andalucia is synonymous with the Costa del Sol, the aptly named sunshine coast with more hours of sunshine per year than any other holiday area (or so the tourist board says and it’s hard to argue!). But there is much much more. Away from the coast, perched precariously on the mountainsides are stunning pueblos blancos, white villages changed little since Ferdinand and Isabella reclaimed Andalucia from the Moors and many still dominated by mediaeval castles. Groves of vines, olives, citrus and cork and fields of sunflowers with their bright cheerful heads swaying happily in the soft breeze; flamenco and fiestas, tapas bars and colourful markets, spectacular cities such as Granada, Seville and Cadiz, these are also Andalucia and should not be missed.

In Andalucia and on the Costa del Sol, you really can just be yourself, twelve months of the year.

MARBELLA & ESTEPONA AREA

All are within a short distance of beaches, bars and restaurants and the excellent road system gives access to the stunning hinterland and the spectacular cities of Seville, Cadiz and Granada. And for when the only antidote to all this activity is serious shopping, the designer shops of Marbella and Puerto Banus and the massive La Canada shopping complex are all close by.

SOTOGRANDE

An exclusive, purpose-built development at the southern end of the Costa del Sol close to Gibraltar, Sotogrande is renowned as being one of the most quietly prestigious resorts in the world.

There are villas, houses and apartments in this 5000 acre estate, which is also home to polo in season. Sotogrande boasts the championship course of Valderrama as just one of its lush golf courses, whilst the marina provides over 600 berths hosting some of the finest yachts and speedboats in the Mediterranean. With riding, tennis, an exclusive beach club and supervised activities for children in season, this is a sophisticated retreat for the discerning vacationer.

Sotogrande is closest to the airport in Gibraltar but Malaga, with its more extensive network of flights is also little more than an hour away.

WHITE VILLAGES

Behind the coastal strip, perched precariously on the mountainsides are the stunning pueblos blancos, white villages changed little over the centuries. A classic amongst these is Casares.

Drive inland for just 15km off the main road near Estepona past olive groves and cork trees and, as you turn a bend, you suddenly come across your first spectacular view of the unspoilt and captivating Casares. This is the real Spain; a workaday village where life continues at a leisurely pace and families and friends gather together in the square in the evening for tapas and drinks. Watch eagles soar above the medieaval castle perched on top of a cliff dominating the surrounding countryside and commanding views past the Rock of Gibraltar to the Rif Mountains of North Africa; take scenic walks or go horse riding and, in this best of both worlds, when you feel like company drive down to the coast and join the ‘tourists’ on the beaches and in the smart shopping centres of the Costa del Sol.
